These Volkswagen-sized beetles have an uneven grid of pulsating sacs lining their shells, which can rapidly spawn and launch swarm locusts (below). They must “root” (dig their feet into the earth, stabilizing themselves) in order to launch them, and aren't terribly quick-moving to begin with; they serve primarily as point-defense and assault artillery.

Locusts: When “rooted” (it takes 1 turn to root or unroot), a swarm host can launch locusts from back-sacs. At any time, there are 1d+1 locusts ready to deploy; replacement locusts spawn at a rate of 1 per 3 turns.

Traits: Zerg; Extra Legs (4 Legs); No Fine Manipulators. When rooted, they gain No Legs (Sessile).

Skills: Brawling-18.

Spawned from the dorsal carapace of a swarm host, these nasty critters are the size of a Doberman Pincher. Their characteristics vary by the specific breed of swarm host; the most common look more like scarabs than actual Earth locusts, and attack with globs of acidic spittle. Other variants include flying locusts (who spit the same acid), and flying explosive kamikaze locusts, similar to (but smaller, and packing somewhat less wallop) scourge.
